As Houston, Texas rapper, producer and parent of the century Beat King releases the fourth installment in his epic Club God mixtape series, we have to admit to running out of superlatives to describe just how consistently, resolutely and powerfully his music has an effect on us. So to put it in a more historic context, we can only compare his delivery of an undiluted combination of bungee-jump intense production, perfectly timed, worded and articulated vocals, and, crucially, his own inimitable sense of humour into something bordering on Three 6 Mafia in one of their many creative peaks. Yes, he’s that good.

And on Club God 4, aside from the notably higher-profile set of features (Riff Raff, Danny Brown, Gangsta Boo, Paul Wall, Lil Keke, Dorrough, Kirko, Chamillionaire and many more) we’re reminded, as on the Southern Hospitality-premiered Don’t Do Dat, that Beat King has his grip firmly on the pulse of underground Houston – bringing Sauce Twinz member Sancho Saucy, Moe Gang’s Rodji Diego and 5th Ward JP, Austin’s DT Blanco and producer Sgt J (one to watch if ever there was anyone worth watching) straight into the spotlight.
