This is how you make a statement. Fresh off the release of his critically acclaimed Roachy Balboa project, one of the Bay Area’s most animated voices cements himself as the region’s most likely to blow outside state lines.

Pop Off is typically energetic, elastic, impassioned Roach, but the backdrop to the video – deserted, boarded-up small businesses, a court case over the tragic murder of Oscar Grant by BART police, and an outraged community in protest and ready to riot – elevate the experience (directed by the eminent Aris Jerome) to something altogether more powerful than anything else we’ve seen this year.

We suspect this could be Roach’s moment. But equally we know it’s really only the beginning. RIP Oscar Grant.
