Although born and raised in Shorter, a small town in Macon County, Alabama, Kristmas is best known for rapping with Huntsville’s finest and repping Slow Motion Soundz, the Rocket City’s foremost record label and music hub. More crucially, the (proud) full-time mobile phone salesman is the originator of the W2 Boy movement – the central tenet being that it’s better to be a rapper with a day job than one who sells drugs or gang-bangs part-time. The most eloquent expression of his W2 Boy manifesto was encapsulated in G-Side’s ‘Rising Sun’, one of the most sonically epic songs in recent memory, but one that stayed completely grounded in its championing of the workforce across three killer verses and an at-first deceptive, but altogether mesmeric Slim Thug-sampled hook.
Whether you know him as Kristmas, Mr December 25th, The Freshest Fat Boy On The Planet Goddamnit, or any of his many other monikers, to us the man is just an incredible rapper who always has something refreshing to say, and always says it in a similarly piercing southern twang to the late, legendary Pimp C, or closer to home, the now incarcerated King of Huntsville, Big P.O.P.E.
And this best-of mixtape project, a gift from Kristmas and Southern Hospitality delivered to you at the midnight (GMT) that falls between Christmas Eve and Day, is quite simply an astounding selection of his very early work on Shorter Boy Records and the more recent material on or around Slow Motion Soundz, whether on guest verses, as one-third of Alabamian super-group DB49 (alongside ST 2 Lettaz of G-Side and Bentley of Alabama Hustle Unit) or, as on the bonus track, riding one of 2010’s most ubiquitous UK grime riddims like it’s nothing. Welcome to the world of Kristmas. Enjoy.
