The ‘Twelve 12s’ are back once again – we’re on our 52nd with a very special DJ Spinna themed mix from our man James Hamlin – aka J-Squared!
There’s little that J-Squared doesn’t know about hip-hop, music and well…life in general! Having been in the music scene for years and promoting legendary club nights like ‘Off The Hook’ in Derby; as part of the world-famous Breakin Bread crew he now delivers one of the most respected radio shows/podcasts around with two hours of unadulterated musical goodness and knowledge. Also, as well as his many ongoing musical endeavours, he is co-host of one of the fastest growing sports podcasts in the UK with the amazing North London 40 show (lovers of American Football do not sleep on this) and still finds the time to do this amazing mix for us! It must have been difficult for J-Squared to settle on one theme such is the extent of his fantastic record collection, however, we’re glad he did go for one of hip-hop, soul and house music’s underrated heros! Here’s what he had to say about it…
‘In the period of 1999-2002, there was arguably no recording artist more prolific out there than DJ Spinna. His output was almost weekly, from remixes popping up on releases you wouldn’t normally touch, his own productions on his Beyond Real label, the groups he was a part of including Network Reps, Polyrhythm addicts and Jigmasters as well as being part of the initial Rawkus Roster, even persuading Eminem to jump on the B side of the Rock 12″. Perhaps the most interesting thing for me at the time were his House productions. As a young(ish) Hip hop DJ and fan I always saw a huge barrier to crossing over into other genres of music, especially house music – it seemed like another world. DJ Spinna was a true pioneer in this regard. He brought a Hip Hop aesthetic to his productions, coming to the UK working with guys in the game and made some incredible music. These are just a few of the hundreds of tracks he put out over the period, with a special mention going out to Days Like This – a record that will still be played at Carnival for the next hundred years, I’m convinced of that. A wonderful collection of work and a pleasure to do this Twelve 12’s mix.’
