The ‘Twelve 12s’ are back once again with our 59th mix & another absolute classic from our man Jimmy Plates! Plates has selected 12 records from one of our very favourite groups of all time – the Ultramagnetic MCs!
’25 years ago the hip hop landscape was different and was about to change again! 1987-88 saw the “Golden Era” of the James Brown sampled beats pioneered by groups such as Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim & Boogie Down productions. Slightly less popular than their piers but by no means less influential, The Ultramagnetic MCs dropped one of the acclaimed Rap albums of the era, “Critical Beatdown” after a string of underground single releases. The band had two more albums & labels until their split in the mid 90s with Kool Keith venturing into the start of many pseudonyms and sequinned cape rap madness. However he never sounded as futuristic as he did then. So here’s twelve slabs of alternate versions, remixes & B-sides, enjoy the sound of future space rap from way back when.’ – Jimmy Plates
